ʻAha Kūkā ʻŌlelo
Co-sponsored by Waimanalo Hawaiian Homes Association and the Hawaiian Studies/Hawaiian Language Faculty at Windward Community College
In 1896 the Republic of Hawaii passed a law banning the use of the Hawaiian language as a medium of instruction in Hawaii schools. Emblematic of the political shift of those times, the law and other social pressures steered the Hawaiian language in our community through a period of suppression that resulted in the overall waning of our communities’ ability to converse, or live our Hawaiian cultural lives through the spoken word.
With funding from the Administration for Native Americans (ANA) Windward Community College (WCC) has embarked on a project to assess the status of the Hawaiian language in our Koʻolau communities and to develop a plan from our community toward supporting what already exists, and expanding the revitalization efforts beyond where they currently stand.
Come and talk story or just listen to our ʻOhana experiences with ʻŌlelo Hawaii, comments about our history, our present, and ideas for our future.
